Permission to Pause: How Rest Fuels Productivity and Well-Being

In the demanding world of law, the relentless pursuit of excellence often leads attorneys to overlook a fundamental aspect of well-being: rest. A recent survey revealed that lawyers experienced burnout 52% of the time—the highest level to date.

This constant state of overexertion diminishes productivity and poses significant risks to mental and physical health. Rule 1.1 of the ABA Model Rules of Professional Conduct requires lawyers to provide “competent representation” to clients. Surely, lawyers are unable to provide competent representation when they are in a bad physical or mental state. By giving yourself small moments throughout your day to rest you can recenter, recharge and strengthen your overall self-care regimen.

Embracing Rest as a Productivity Superpower

Despite the fact that rest has so many benefits, many attorneys grapple with the notion of taking breaks, often associating it with guilt or unproductiveness. To shift this mindset, consider the following mindfulness strategies:

  1. Notice Resistance: Observe your feelings during downtime. Does guilt arise? Acknowledge these emotions without judgment.

  2. Reframe Rest: View rest as an essential component of your well-being, akin to eating or sleeping. It's a necessity, not a luxury.

  3. Set Intentional Rest Periods: Deliberately schedule short breaks throughout your day to pause, breathe, and rejuvenate. These intervals can prevent burnout over time.

Insights from the Conscious Corner with Annie + Courtney Podcast

In a recent episode of Conscious Corner Podcast with Annie + Courtney, which is set to release one week from today, Annie and I delved into the societal pressures that equate constant activity with value, especially prevalent in the legal field. We discussed how this mindset leads to exhaustion and emphasized that rest is not only acceptable, but crucial for maintaining effectiveness. Engaging with Our Community

This week, I conducted a poll asking: "How often do you give yourself permission to rest without guilt?" The options were:

  • Always

  • Sometimes

  • Rarely

  • Never

The responses highlighted a common struggle among professionals to embrace rest without associated guilt. So, if you notice some resistance towards resting, know that you are not alone!

The Cost of Neglecting Rest

Neglecting rest has tangible consequences. A 2023 survey found that 28% of lawyers considered leaving the profession due to mental health challenges, burnout, or stress. This statistic underscores the critical need for integrating rest into our routines.
